What Do Mom Groups & VA Life Have in Common?

Back in my corporate life, I was a Community Manager for a social networking site just for moms (it was basically Facebook, but only for moms). They had massive ad budgets and therefore a huge user base. My team was all remote and we moderated the site 24/7. It was my favorite job in the whole wide world.

Members of that site were able to create their own micro communities or groups - Boy Moms, NYC Moms, Latina Moms...etc. One of the most common questions from members who started a new group was "How can I get moms to join my new group?"

[Kind of sounds like one of the 3 struggles for every business.😉]

Why was that even a struggle for them? Cause the site in and of itself was already a supportive network for moms with thousands of groups. So why would I join this Latina Mom group over THAT Latina Mom group? "Oh because this is a general Latina Mom group, and that one is for Latinas in NYC." Now I have something to relate to. People usually don’t just join things for the sake of it. They need a reason that speaks to them personally. A hook. A rally point.

You need a defined reason that speaks to someone's Passion, Pain, or Profession.

💡 Now, what does this have to do with your Virtual Assistant business?

A lot of new VAs make the mistake of marketing themselves too broadly.

🛑 “I help small businesses.” → Um, with what?! Too vague.

🛑 “I do admin, social media, and customer service.” → For whom?! Still too broad.

🔑 You attract clients the same way you grow a group or community - you meet them where they already are inside of a struggle they have that YOU know how to help with. Give them a REASON to choose YOU.

✅ Instead of just saying “I’m a Virtual Assistant,” niche down:

"I help blue-collar businesses keep up with admin work & invoices."

"I specialize in handling inbox & scheduling for busy realtors."

"I help boutique e-commerce brands manage customer service."

Just like how a generic “Mom Group” struggles to grow, a generic VA struggles to get clients.

Find your rally point. The thing that makes your VA business specialized, searchable, and specific.

Yes - you may be the Jane of All Trades and will be able to help Paul the Painter with all his admin, social media, website and ads stuff - but you first have to learn the language and lingo of the clients you want to attract. How you pitch to a Hair Salon Owner will be different than how you pitch to a Social Media Influencer.
