🎯 The Do's and Don'ts of Cold Pitching as a Virtual Assistant
One of our amazing Do The Boring Work community members just shared how she landed a client through Instagram DMs! And it's worth sharing because any of us can do the same thing.
Cold Pitching as a Virtual Assistant
While IG can seem like an endless ocean of curated noise, this win demonstrates how simply being real can land you amazing opportunities.
Her approach? "I commended him on his business model and showed up as my genuine self. I regularly comment on his posts because they're awesome - and offered my help in a simple way, no pressure."
Let's break down why this approach worked:
• She built genuine connection through regular, authentic engagement
• Showed real understanding and appreciation of the business model
• Kept the offer simple and pressure-free
• Was her authentic self instead of using "salesy" language
That's why it landed - no fancy templates or aggressive tactics. Just a real person showing up consistently, understanding the business, and offering help naturally.
From his viewpoint, she wasn't randomly sliding into DMs. She was a familiar face who'd already shown interest in his content and business.
✅ DO:
• Be a real person! Genuine connection beats cookie-cutter templates every time
• Check out their content first and mention something specific
• Show them you understand their business challenges
• Share a quick, relevant example of how you've helped similar businesses
• Make it easy to say yes with a clear next step
❌ DON'T:
• Copy/paste the same message to 100 people (they can tell!)
• Jump straight into your service list
• Write a novel in their DMs
• Forget to proofread (seriously, take 30 seconds)
• Get discouraged if they don't respond - timing is everything
🔥 Pro Tip: It takes 60 seconds to write a THOUGHTFUL comment on someone's post. Do that on 25 posts per day on your preferred platform, and you'll notice the shift in engagement. Your feed will start showing you MORE of what you're engaging with.
The KEY? Do this on accounts you'd actually want to work with.
Remember: Every "no" gets you closer to the right "yes." Keep it real, keep it relevant, and keep pitching!
