I Don’t Do Sales Calls

I don’t do sales calls. I can't. I suck at them. If everyone’s lives depended on me "selling" something to someone… sorry, peeps, we’re done!

I learned early on that I cannot "sell." And it's because anytime someone told me I have to 'sell this' it’s like my brain froze from the horror. But truth is - we are ALL selling, negotiating, being sold to all.day.long. From our morning coffee, to putting our kid on the school bus, to our workout routine, there is time being exchanged for something. Being a VA is no different - you are SELLING all the time - either your services, your clients services or though the act of doing good work so your client can further sell their services.
In order to get over my block, instead of selling I decided to do this:
State the Facts.
Tell the Truth.
Eff the Fluff.
Basically just talk.
The other day, I had a call with a potential client on behalf of my client (I’m the middle woman). AKA - A Sales Call. I was qualifying the potential client and in turn, "selling" them - no, talking to them about - my client’s services.
What was supposed to be a 30-minute call turned into 55 minutes of vibing, honest discussion and mutual understanding with a Board member representing their condo association. She was transparent about their situation and I appreciated it because, if we win this contract it’s going to be a big undertaking (with some legal headaches).
The takeaway
Get on the calls. See them as practice and that takes some of the edge off.
State the facts.
Tell the truth.
Forget the fluff.
Your honesty, transparency, and personality will do the rest. Just talk about what you do and what you know. Don't pretend you are something that you are not. I'm honest when I don't know an app or a term but always tell a potential client I'm willing to learn - IF I AM INDEED willing to learn. [there are just some things I don't want to learn and I'm honest about that, too.]
Client: Property Management
Task: Inquiry came in about full-service management. Spoke with a Board member about managing a 10 residential/1 commercial unit condominium building. New build, first-time owners, amenities. Recent damaging flood occured. Current management is unresponsive. The Board has no idea about finances. Possible hostile transfer, legal involvement expected.
Result: If we get a successful signing - I earn a $250 onboarding fee + monthly retainer for reports.
Wish me luck!
If you get the icks like me when it comes to sales calls, I created a quick worksheet to help get you through the ordeal! It's in my community HERE.
